Hey, neighbor
Your Mediterranean Restaurant Near Shorewood
If you live in Shorewood, you already drive our road. AMBA is a Mediterranean restaurant near Shorewood, IL, at 1522 Illinois Rte 59 in Joliet, where four Lebanese brothers carve gyro and shawarma off the spit every day.

Getting here from Shorewood
Route 59 runs right through Shorewood. Locals know it as Brook Forest Avenue and Cottage Street, and Route 59 ends at its interchange with I-55 right there in Shorewood. Jefferson Street, which is US 52, crosses Shorewood too. We sit on Route 59 in Joliet, so from most of Shorewood it’s 59 and done.
Coming off I-55? Take the Route 59 exit and you’re on our road. That interchange got rebuilt in 2024, so if you avoided it during construction, it’s worth another try. Full address and hours are on our visit page.
The quick lunch for Shorewood
Shorewood is close enough to make us a real lunch-break option. That’s why the counter moves the way it does. You walk down the line, point, and your food is built in front of you. No waiting on a kitchen you can’t see.
If you’re on the clock, here’s our advice: order on our online ordering page before you leave, then walk in and grab it. A signature wrap is the fastest thing to eat in the car, if we’re being honest. We won’t tell anyone.
Start with the gyro
If you only try one thing, make it the gyro. Seasoned meat stacked on a spit, slowly turning, shaved off in thin slices so you get crispy edges and a juicy middle in every bite. We pile it high. One guest’s husband said his gyro was “absolutely loaded with meat,” and that’s how we like it.
You can get it three ways. In a pita or wrap, with a spread, three toppings and house sauce. In a build-your-own bowl. Or as part of a family meal if you’re feeding the house. Our pick for a first gyro bowl: fresh mixed greens, roasted red pepper hummus, gyro, tomato and cucumber salad, crumbled feta and pickled onions, then tzatziki on top. Tzatziki is a cool yogurt and cucumber sauce, and it was made for gyro.
Not a gyro person?
No hard feelings. Here’s what else is worth a look:
- Chicken shawarma. Chicken carved off the spit. Juicy, generous, a crowd pleaser.
- Tawook. Lebanese-style grilled chicken. A different, grilled flavor from the spit meats.
- Falafel. Crispy chickpea fritters, vegetarian and gluten free. Try them dipped in spicy feta.
- Greek fries. Fresh-cut fries with olive oil, seasoning and feta. Order them for the table and watch them vanish.
Taste before you commit
Here’s the thing about being the neighborhood spot. We want you back next week, not just today. So if you’re staring at the board wondering what baba ghanouj is (smoky roasted eggplant dip) or whether harissa is too hot (it’s spicy, but friendly), just ask for a taste. Everyone on the line will happily give you a sample of anything. That’s how you find your order.
Our tip for Shorewood first-timers: try two meats before you pick. Chicken shawarma and gyro taste completely different, and the only way to know your favorite is to taste both. Then add a cup of house-made ginger mint lemonade. Nobody regrets the lemonade.
“Greeted when we hit the door. The cook staff let me try different meat options to add to my shawarma bowl – saffron rice was flavorful so were all the toppings to add.”
